Srinagar, Nov 18 (KNO): With winter setting in across Jammu and Kashmir, the administration in Kupwara district has begun stocking essential commodities in areas that often remain cut off due to heavy snowfall. Officials said several regions in the frontier district get disconnected from the district headquarters and the rest of the country every year, leading to temporary shortages of food grains and cooking gas. According to reports received by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), ration supplies including rice, flour, sugar, and LPG cylinders have already been dispatched to snow-prone areas such as Karnah, Keran, Machil, Kandi, and other far off hamlets. So far, around 36,000 quintals of rice have reached these regions, while another 4,000 quintals are being transported by the Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs. In addition, about 260 quintals of sugar and 1,400 quintals of flour have been supplied to ensure adequate stock during the coming months. Sources said 170 ration depots in these areas have been filled to capacity to prevent any scarcity during peak winter. Adequate LPG cylinders have also been stocked to ensure uninterrupted supply in the snowbound belts. Meanwhile, residents of several areas of Kupwara have appealed to the government to restore electricity to their region. Over 70 families have complained that they received power for only five days after the first installation in 2013, and since then, the area has remained in darkness without any follow-up from the authorities—(KNO)
